Hermes (Greek: Ἑρμῆς, English: Hermes) is the Ancient Greek god of commerce, traveler, thief and animal husbandry. Messenger of the gods, one of the Twelve Olympian gods. He was the son of Maia, daughter of Zeus and Atlas, and was also called Mercury in Rome.

Hermes was born in a cave in Arcadia and was the first god of Arcadia. After the unification of Olympus, he became the edict and messenger of Zeus. He was also regarded as the protector of travellers, doctors, thieves and merchants, and the god of eloquence. Legend has it that he invented the ruler, the number and the alphabet. He was clever and cunning, and was regarded as the creator of the art of deception, which he passed on to his son. He was also the inventor of the lyre and the patron saint of Greek sporting events.

Later, he was mixed with the Ancient Egyptian god of wisdom, Toth, and was considered a patron of magic. His wand could put god and man to sleep and awaken them from dreams.

Hermes invented drilling wood for fire, and he also invented the harp. Hermes was also the inventor of various athletic competitions and boxing, and thus became the patron saint of athletes. Modern myth collectors often compare Hermes to Trickster, a Trickster from other cultures.

Hermes was also the spirit of the dead, he helped dead souls to reach the underworld. In many Greek myths, Hermes was the only god other than Hades and Proserpine who had free access to the underworld.

Hermes is represented by rooster and tortoise. He wears a leather bag or wallet, winged sandals on his feet, a winged hat, and carries the scepter of Shang, also known as the double snake scepter. Hermes also became the god of thieves because of his wit and cunning. He was already a thief on the first night of his life, slipping away from his mother Maia to steal the sacred ox of his brother Apollo.

Hermes was very loyal to his father Zeus. When IO, one of the lovers of Zeus, nymph, was captured by Hera and sent Argos, the hundred-eyed giant, to guard her, Hermes rescued her. He lulled the giant to sleep by singing his sweet songs and telling him tedious stories, and then cut off his head with a scimitar.

Hermes corresponds to Mercury in Roman mythology, and Mercury inherited many of hermes’s characteristics, such as the patron saint of commerce. Hermes had wings on his feet so that he could fly and became the messenger of Zeus and the gods on Mount Olympus, carrying messages to the gods and accomplishing various tasks assigned to him by Zeus.
