Braschi Antinous was an Ancient Roman marble sculpture created in 138 AD. It lives in the Vatican Museums in Italy. The image is based on educational fair use and marks Greek and Roman mythology.

Born in 110 BC, of a Greek background. Before meeting Hadrian, he had been living in the imperial province of Bithynia (northwest of Anatolia). When he was young, he was taken by hadrian who was traveling by and became his boy pet, accompanying him all over the empire. The other is that Hadrian decreed that beautiful young men should be chosen as his favorite in the empire, and that Antinus was chosen by him himself. Drowning was mentioned in 130, but the actual cause of death is unknown, most likely suicide. After his death Hadrian ordered craftsmen to mass-produce his sculptures and head and place them in every corner of the empire.

 

In a village called Helvay, the farmers pulled up the body of Antinus. Hadrian wrote that “he fell into the Nile” as if it had been a simple accident, but generations later biographers suggested that political enemies might have held out evil hands to him.

The grieving Hadrian urged his partner to become a god. He built a city, and even the sky was dedicated to him: immediately after the tragedy, astrologists spotted an unknown celestial body and confirmed to Hadrian that it was the soul of Antinus — a star that still bears his name.

New cults quickly spread across Roman land, bringing with them new priests, new sacred tables, or commemorative games and festivals. Coins were minted in his name in 30 Greek cities. In Italy, Greece, Asia Minor, and the Near East, where the sounds of craftsmen reverberated, hundreds of bronze and marble statues were completed — all dedicated to Antius.
