Catherine Wilkinson (1786–1860) was an Irish immigrant, “worker’s wife”, and later known as the saint of the slums. When the cholera epidemic occurred in 1832, there was only one boiler near her home, so she invited those with infected clothes or linens to use it, thus saving many lives. This is the first public toilet in Liverpool. Ten years later, with the help of public funds, her efforts led to the opening of a combined laundry room and public bathroom, which was the first in the UK.

How did kitty Wilkinson die?

Kitty died in Liverpool in 1860. Her work, both with homeless children and in sanitation, saved many lives. She continues to be honored and remembered for her tireless efforts. In fact, in 2012, a marble statue of Kitty was unveiled in St. George’s hall – though sadly, of the 12 statues honoring famous figures, Kitty is the only woman represented.
