Antonio Canova’s statue “The Three Graces” is a neoclassical marble three graces god classic sculpture carved by three mythic Charites (daughters of Zeus) — in some engravings of the statue, From left to right are Euphrosyne, Aglaea and Thalia — they are said to represent youth/beauty (Thalia), joy (Euphrosyne) and grace (Aglaea). Art historians have often commented on the seemingly peaceful balance between the three heads. Unlike the composition derived from Graces in ancient times, where the outer figure faces the viewer while the central figure embraces her friend with her back to the viewer, Canova’s figures stand side by side, facing each other.

Three slender female figures merge in their arms, linked by their hands and a scarf. The unity of grace is one of the themes of the work. In countess Josephine’s version, the Graces stand on an altar decorated with three garlands and one wreath, symbolizing their fragile and intimate relationship.
