In 1595, the Belgian geographer and cartographer Gerardus Mercator used atlas as the title of the atlas for the first time in the front of an atlas of his book, and the image of Atlas shouldering the earth spread out.

In addition, the giant stone pillars of some large contemporary buildings are carved into giant images to support the entire building. These statues are collectively called atlas in English, probably because they resemble the image of the Hercules Atlas who was punished for hard labor.
