The sculpture “The Veiled Christ” located in the middle of the San Severo Chapel is one of the most famous and impressive sculptures. It is carved from a whole piece of marble.

In the sculpture, the swollen blood vessels on Jesus’ forehead seem to be jumping regularly, and the wounded parts of his hands and feet, and the concave part of the edge of the body appear loose due to death. The sculptor did not follow the rules to over-portrait these parts, but carefully “embroidered” the details of the edges of the veil, and spent more time sculpting at the feet of Jesus to show the thorns of Jesus’ crucifixion. The art of San Martino becomes a dramatic call here, transforming the crucifixion of Jesus into a symbol of the fate and redemption of all mankind.
