What is an altar?

The altar is the table where mass sacrifices are held. In the early days of the church, masses were often held at the tombs of the martyrs, so the bones of the martyrs were usually hidden in the sacred stone in the middle of the altar, called altar stone. Candles were lit during the offering and covered with white altar cloths. The Latin for altar is altare.

The altar is the dining table of the Lord Jesus Christ. It is the center of the Thanksgiving feast. All sacraments and rituals converge in this center. The altar and the Eucharist are the source and culmination of church life. Because our salvation is sanctified by Jesus’ crucifixion and the blood and water flowing from his side, the new sacrifice on the altar is to continue the sacrifice in a sacramental manner until the coming of Christ again. Therefore, the altar represents Christ, so it highlights that Jesus is the center of the Old and New Testament churches and the mediator of heaven and man.

In the beginning, the altar used by the apostles to hold the Thanksgiving sacrifice must be the dining table of the home. Later, after the development of the times, from simple to complex, it gradually became symbolic, noble, and artistic. Then the modern ritual innovation restored the altar to its original appearance and strengthened its symbolic meaning, and also enabled the believers to understand its importance and nobility and give them proper respect.
