St. Michael has four different characters. First, he was the supreme enemy of Satan and the fallen angels. He defeated Satan, and cast him out of heaven, and will be victorious in the moment of decisive battle with Satan. Second, he was the Christian Angel of Death: at the moment of death, Saint Michael descended and gave every soul the opportunity to redeem itself before, thereby making the devil and his minions. St. Michael’s third role was to weigh the soul in his perfectly balanced scales (hence the saints are often depicted as holding the scales) on Judgment Day. Finally, St. Michael is the guardian of the church.
In the Catholic tradition, Saint Michael symbolizes the triumph of good and evil, and he has been widely represented in the ancient days of Catholic art. The devout saint Michael had a large Catholic following, and a large number of churches were dedicated to him all over the world.
