“Pruto and Proserpine” is a sculpture work created by the famous Italian sculptor ZianLaurenzo Benigni. The sculpture is based on an ancient Roman tale depicting the time when Pluto, the god of the underworld, forced Proserpine into exile as his wife.
The content of the sculpture is taken from ancient Roman mythology. Pluto, the god of the underworld, took an interest in the daughter of Ceres, the goddess of grain. He took her to the underworld and changed her name to Proserpine. This sculpture of two people entwined and wrestling with each other can be interpreted in three different ways when viewed from three different directions. From the left, Pluto is holding Proserpine up as she tries to free herself; Seen from the front, the whole sculpture appears to be Pluto showing off his prize and taking her into the underworld; On Proserpine’s face, seen from the right, are the tears of her prayer to heaven, the wind blowing her hair, and at her feet the three-headed dog (Cerberus) who guards the gate of hell is growling.
